Our Story

Hello! I’m Jess, the woman behind ‘Beyond Repair’

I’m a lover of vintage clothes, slow fashion, and textiles. As part of a team of talented makers, I patch denim, darn knitwear, replace zips, mend seams, and much more, helping you to fight textile waste and enjoy your wardrobe. As a life long dabbler in creative projects I have always loved making by hand, with sewing, knitting and ceramic creation being my top three interests. This history of cross-disciplinary problem solving has given me confidence in figuring things out, meaning diagnosing repairs for clothes came naturally and was an immediate fit for me.

My Background

My Granny and parents taught me to sew from an early age, and encouraged me to explore fashion and textiles as I grew up. I loved making clothes for myself, and so it was with great joy that I found myself living in Falmouth and working as a sewist for the Cornish slow fashion brand created by Sarah Johnson. By then I had a small family, and I taught myself how to repair clothes as my little one was at my feet cutting out her own patches. It was at this point that I decided to apply for a degree in Fashion at Falmouth University.

Whilst studying, I dived into fashion history, learned hundreds of sewing and knitting skills, perfected my pattern cutting, and got to grips with digital design. I loved understanding how the magic of three dimensional forms were created through 2D layouts, and how meticulous, often repetitive stitching, could help a fabric take shape and come to life.

As I learned how destructive the fashion industry is to our planet, I felt myself turning my back on mass produced clothing, and instead falling ever more deeply in love with the natural world around me, and the clothes that we can make from sustainable fibres that our earth produces. I went deeper into the study of repairing clothes, and found a new kind of fascination in the utilitarian element of how repair can be implemented into our fashion styles.

Clothing Repair

Through observation and the analysis of how an item was originally constructed, we find a deeper magic; that through the repairing of clothes, we can bring what we thought was dead back to life.

After a few years of repairing clothes for people in my sewing space at home, I moved to my little workshop at Outer Space Collective in Old Brewery Yard. Tucked in to the side of Falmouth’s Old High Street, it is an eclectic space for creatives which I find exhilarating! I now have more room, and can open the doors to accept clothing repairs from all over Cornwall and beyond.

As I now have two young kids, I work part time and divide the work with other talented makers who share Beyond Repair’s values for sustainable fashion. We also sell some second-hand mended wear from our workshop in Old Brewery Yard, and offer micro production for small fashion designers and artist led businesses.
